We Took Our Own Engagement Photos — And Honestly, It Was So Worth It

There’s something really special about being a photographer… and then suddenly finding yourself on the other side of the camera.

The morning of my bridal hair and makeup trial felt like the perfect opportunity — everything was already done, I felt a little extra beautiful, and it just made sense to turn it into something more. So we grabbed the tripod, my Sony A6700, and decided: today’s the day we take our own engagement photos.

The weather didn’t exactly show off for us.
It was one of those soft, gloomy days where the clouds are a bit too bright and the light feels a little unpredictable… but we worked with it. And honestly? I think that’s part of what made it so real.

There were a few unexpected guests too — a couple of dog photobombs here and there — and a lot of moments that didn’t go “perfectly”… but somehow that’s exactly what made it perfect.

We ended up with a whole collection of beautiful images — not just pretty photos, but little pieces of a season of our lives that I know we’ll look back on one day and feel all over again.

And I think that’s what mattered most to me.

The best part about being a photographer is knowing that I can just pick up my camera and go whenever I want.
(Not that I always do… but it’s comforting to know the option is there.)

There’s something really empowering in that — in not having to wait, not having to plan around someone else, just deciding this moment matters and capturing it.

And then there was the actual experience of shooting…

Setting up the tripod.
Running back into frame.
Yelling, “a little left! no, your other left… okay wait, come a bit closer!”

It’s chaotic, slightly ridiculous, and honestly… so much fun.

It didn’t feel like a photoshoot. It felt like us — laughing, figuring it out as we went, and just enjoying being together.

What surprised me the most was the reaction afterwards.

The awe and excitement from our friends and family made me realise that this wasn’t just a “quick little DIY shoot” — it was something special. Something worth doing.

And it reminded me that sometimes, the most meaningful photos aren’t the perfectly planned ones… but the ones you create simply because you felt like it in that moment

Would I recommend taking your own engagement photos?

Honestly — yes.
If you’re up for a little effort, a bit of trial and error, and a lot of laughter, it can be such a beautiful experience.

But I’ll also say this… there’s something incredibly valuable about being able to just be present and let someone else capture it for you.

And that’s where I come in 🤍

If you’re dreaming of engagement photos that feel natural, relaxed, and genuinely like you, I’d love to help you create that — whether it’s guiding you through the process or capturing it all for you.
